5 AUG 2024: Manila, Philippines: There are numerous global trends that are shaping increased corporate social responsibility (CSR) in education. Among these, three stand out: the digital transformation in education, the focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the rise of partnerships and collaborations.
LBC Foundation has consistently stayed ahead of these trends, aligning its initiatives with global best practices to maximize its impact. LBC Foundation has also relied on the spirit of volunteerism among its employees which has been deeply ingrained in their culture. For this reason, it’s no surprise that 2023 was considered a year of significant achievements for LBC Foundation. In all, they were able to organize 69 volunteer activities involving 1,472 employees last year. These activities ranged from educational support programs and environmental sustainability projects to healthcare and community development initiatives.
Here’s a closer look of the Top Five Significant Initiatives of LBC Foundation that has made a difference in the lives of both volunteers and beneficiaries alike.
1.Education Programs: Building a Brighter Future
Education remains at the heart of LBC Foundation’s mission. In 2023, a substantial portion of the Foundation’s funds were allocated to educational initiatives and these efforts have reached over 47,000 beneficiaries, including 9,140 elementary students, 731 daycare students, 363 teachers, and 64 college students.
Among LBC’s standout initiatives is the Dorm Project. Designed to support students from economically challenged areas by providing a 40-bed dormitory at Tulay na Lupa National High School in Camarines Norte. Through this program, the Foundation ensures students have a safe and conducive learning environment, helping them directly address barriers to education, and allowing students to focus on their studies rather than the challenges of long commutes.
Complementary to this, the distribution of modern educational tools such as tablets and laptops helped students’ learning experiences and bridge the digital divide, ensuring that all students have access to technology.
“Addressing barriers to education is important for youth to achieve academic success. There’s so much research that indicates that students with access to essential resources, such as stable housing, adequate nutrition, and digital tools, have significantly better academic outcomes. By eliminating these obstacles, we can improve individual educational achievements as well as promote long-term economic growth and social stability within communities,” says Melissa-Ann S. Macarubbo, Program Specialist of LBC Hari ng Padala Foundation.
2.Employee Welfare: Supporting the Backbone of the Company
The welfare of employees and their families is another priority for the LBC Foundation, as a well-supported workforce directly contributes to the Foundation’s educational mission.
Last year, the LBC Foundation’s employee welfare programs contributed to scholarship grants for 21 dependents of employees, provided medical assistance for individuals, and supported numerous volunteer activities for over a thousand employee volunteers.
The Foundation’s scholarship program has been particularly impactful, with five scholars graduating in the 2022-2023 academic year.
“The program covers the full cost of tuition, up to PHP 50,000 per semester, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the educational aspirations of employees’ dependents. Our vision is to invest in the education of our employee’s families as a way to demonstrate our loyalty to team members while also fostering a culture that values lifelong learning and development in the organization,” Macarubbo adds.
3. Environmental Sustainability: Greening the Future
The LBC Foundation participated in the National Greening Program, adopting a site at La Mesa Watershed Reservation, where the Foundation organized a tree-planting activity.
The event gathered LBC employees who planted 500 native bignay trees as part of a broader commitment to environmental sustainability to improve air quality, reduce soil erosion, and providing habitats for wildlife. Their goal? To ensure a healthier planet for future generations, thereby supporting the long-term viability of educational environments.
Additionally, these green initiatives teach students the importance of sustainability and stewardship of natural resources, contributing positively to the community and the environment.
4. Community and Special Programs: Uplifting the Underserved
The LBC Foundation’s community and special programs targeted a wide range of beneficiaries, including 300 pregnant women, 2,083 parents, and several schools and communities across the Philippines.
The “Bringing Joy through Education” program supports abandoned and at-risk children. This initiative covers teachers’ salaries, school supplies, uniforms, and other direct expenses, ensuring that these children receive a quality education and a chance for a better future. By focusing on the most vulnerable populations, LBC Foundation helps break the cycle of poverty through education, empowering these children to aspire to and achieve brighter futures.
5. Healthcare Initiatives: Healing and Hope
Healthcare initiatives have also been a critical focus for the LBC Foundation, recognizing that healthy students are better learners. To that end, the Foundation provided medical assistance to 16 individuals, including those with dreaded diseases and acute illnesses. These efforts are complemented by the Foundation’s support for various community health programs, which aim to improve overall health and well-being in underserved areas.
One notable project is the provision of water pump systems to 10 schools under the Brigada Eskwela program. This initiative ensures that schools have access to clean and sufficient water, essential for maintaining hygiene and preventing diseases.
